On a Saturday evening I felt a pain in my left side while I was taking care of my daughter’s dog. It was not very painful but it seemed a little odd. Even though it was inconvenient I decided to have it checked out at urgent care. This decision landed me in the emergency room that night. A very astute emergency room doctor told me it was one of three things before he even ran tests. One of those was ovarian cancer which I quickly dismissed. Test results showed that I had a mass in my left side that later was diagnosed as stage 3c ovarian cancer. This all took place when I was 70 years old in June of 2014 right after I had just purchased a new home. Purchasing my new home was a very good thing as it has kept me involved and busy with things I love to do.
After the debulking my doctor told me I had a 40% chance for a five year survival I made a decision at that point in order to reach those odds I would need to do everything I could for myself. I spent a lot of time learning about diet and exercise as well as taking advantage of all the support services offered.
At this point I am thankful for my own persistence in my care and for all the wonderful people and services that supported me in my journey. It has been a rocky road. I had a small recurrence within a year that was easily removed in surgery. Then three years later I had a more complicated and challenging abdominal tumor that was finally surgically removed.
So now at age 78 all is well as far as I know. I am enjoying the simple things in life that keep me in touch with this totally awesome world we live in.
